Cleone - ARC 2024 SITREP 2

Cleone ARC 2024SITREP 2Along with mostof the rest of the fleet, we have been heading southwest towards the Cape VerdeIslands but have not yet found the Trade Winds. We have been sailing as well asburning diesel, and something nearly went bump in thenight! As predicted byChris Tibbs at the Skippers’ Briefing, the wind has been behind us. For much ofthe time there has been too little of it for us to make even steerageway and, inorder to make sensible progress, we have been burning precious fuel. Thetraditional sailing directions for seafarers crossing from the Canaries to theCaribbean is to head south until the butter melts, and then turn west. With thisdictum in mind, Kaya and Louisa have been surreptitiously peering into thebutter-tub at the beginning and end of each watch, little. read more...

Bluejay - Blog

tuesday 26th Nov  A good nightssailing with with full main and yankee 1 taking us through the night with thehelp of dolphins again.  The dawnbroke to another day with good visibility and NE3 winds.  Fishing recommenced and it wasn't longbefore Mike had a Mahi Mahi which was soon caught and prepared for us to enjoylater.  Unfortunately the largertuna got away along with Mikes sailing hat ! More to the point Alex then gother crew organised to set up the spinnaker which is now flying as I write and weare sailing very nicely with a top speed of 10 knots (average 7.7) but notquite in the right direction yet - we need to get further south to find thosetrade winds.  To add to theexcitement of the day the first watch had showers  - what a treat!. read more...

Rosiere - First full day at sea

After the excitement of yesterday's start and waving goodbye to family and friends we are starting to settle in. Unfortunately there has been no useful wind today so we've been slowly motoring. Things have changed this evening and we're sailing with the genoa poled out and main sail set on a preventer. We've been enjoying preprepared risotto that Caroline made for us and all is good aboard Rosiere. Today's highlights were a pod of whales swimming past on our portside and catching our first fish. A garfish, not the dorado other boats have been sharing photos of!. read more...

Arkyla - L2D5: Weed!

Finally we have some wind and feel as if this sturdy girl is beginning to find her stride once more.It has been painfully slow for us so far, bur smiles are broader now we are moving at a half respectable pace.No fauna to report so far today, but plenty of flora… sargasso weed!More weed in fact than you’d find stashed in a 1970’s student flat, though we’re not sure what, if any, effects smoking this stuff will induce other than paranoia that it will clog the Hydrogenerator! We are 5 days out now and we continue to find ways to add interest to the day.The countdown of NM to destination prompts lessons from history on our chronological trek backward to the birth of JC when we finally heave-to in Port Louis. The twice daily Sealabs water collection is now introduced with its own jingle, and. read more...

Frances Louise V - November 25th 2024

96 We achieved several milestones on November 25th. Milestone One - we both had showers! We set up two of my “I’ve been thinking” ideas, which always bring out great sighs from David, and a worried expression, followed, always, by brilliant implementation. We have two solar shower bags, filled with non potable Mindelo water, flopping about in the sun on the aft cabin coachroof. We attached one bag to two mizen mast stays, setting it up so that its hose went through the hatch to the aft heads. In there, over the toilet, we put up a temporary slatted seat made out of plastic decking boards, to create a shower seat under the hose. The resultant shower worked brilliantly and was warmer than those in Mindelo Marina!  Milestone Two -. read more...

Cara of the South - Day 2

26:16.08N 15:50.12WMidday Position Day 2 Monday 25th NovemberWe definitely have too much food. Even if we eat a million calories a dayand arrive looking like engorged teletubies we'll still have enough to starta small grocers business in St. Lucia. Jeremy Wyatt once made the point thatno one has ever starved on the ARC, I clearly haven't listened again. I madethis exact same mistake last time, I even have tins of food on here from mylast trip. The problem is you expect every locker to be full and if youhappen upon a slightly empty space you panic buy more stuff you don't need, particularly food. I hear there is a charity in St. Lucia happy to take anyexcess food so I'll get them to send a truck on arrival. We've had tons ofdolphins visit us today and staying for a few hours which was. read more...
