Day Nine at sea.

Finished day 8 on a high, as dinner was cooking Big G caught his "second" fish of the trip, something that resembled a Cod. The Skipper lashed out and we had Rum and cokes while Gus and Pete cooked the fish with mashed potatoes and cabbage preceded by macaroni, a veritable feast. Nick went daft and allowed us a glass of wine or two with the meal which was A1 excellent. Pete then added to the party atmosphere by surprising us all with a package full of party hats and toys, a dram was allowed!! We were celebrating 2/3 of the trip done and in a reasonably good position slightly to the north of the Azores and some good wind albeit easterly. We managed to clock 197 knms in a 24 hour period, this is a record for Johanem. A good wee party was had, it even included some singing and more jokes from Nick.

The Captain has stopped whipping us as moral is now pretty high and talk and bets of arrival time on Horta and thoughts of cold draft beer and seeing land for the first time in nearly two weeks, Monday/Tuesday seem to be the best bets incase any of you back home wish to open a book, we've even narrowed it down to times.
Today started with a stunning sun rise and some good winds from the east and blowing force 4. East winds are making it tight to make Horta on the one beat so we may have to tack at some point losing us time but there is a chance of a bit of north in the next day or so,and therefore hopefully making it in one beat.

Our excitement today has been the sighting of two ships one of which was one the same course as us so we thought it a good idea to move and let it pass as it was 300mtrs long and we are only 14, they were doing 22knts and we were doing 7. We have had some whales for company but they are desperately camera shy and certainly do not flip their tails for us or make easy photography, where is David Atenburgh when you need him.
Ian has found his book and has apologised to us all for accusing us of knicking it. Again.

The crew wish to pass on their best wishes to Hamish Cameron who is 17 on the 25th, for pete's sake don't dent your brother's car before he gets home.

By the end of today we hope to have less than 500 miles to go, how good is that.
The adventure continues next installment sometime tomorrow.

Gus
