Great Escape of Southampton - Great Escape Day One
Day 1
Well, after a delay of two days due to a nearby low
pressure system, we’ve finally departed Las Palmas. With steep 6m swells on the nose it
would not have been very pleasant!
This was in fact only the second such delayed start in the 27 year
history of the ARC. Introductions
are necessary: we are Grigerio from Gran Canaria, Jan and Koori from Norway,
David, Graham and myself (John) from the UK, and the important people Steve
(mate) and Emily (skipper) also from the UK.
It has been a bit on the wild side for the first day,
with around 30 knots of wind and some serious rain squalls. Wet gear is on with warmer gear
underneath and all doing a good job- but where’s the sun?? I think we must have booked the
adrenaline package! It is seriously
good to get moving though and get some miles under our belt. The wildlife watch has produced one
flying fish together with Graham so far, and I’m sure there is more to
come.
