EH01 - Blog 3

Morning all from EH01, life on the high seas is treating us fairly well at the moment, we have good wind, a slight sea, and are making a steady 9 knots, more or less pointing at our destination. We crossed the half way mark yesterday so to celebrate we had a small tot of rum each, as well as some cold cola, both of which went down a treat. Now it's a case of looking at the numbers fall off the distance to go counter, pretty soon we'll be at 1000NM to go, and after that the miles just seem to disappear.

We had some marginal excitement over the last few days. When reefing the other day a batten in the mainsail started to shake itself out, so it was a case of very gingerly dropping the main until it was low enough for me to  climb up and take it out, thankfully we didn't lose it! Shortly after I had a little excursion to the end of the pole to get some cool camera footage, though I had to go out twice as the first time I neglected to turn the camera on! D'oh!

Yesterday we saw another ARC yacht for the first time since we left, I believe it was Arriette, we must have been within a mile of one another, always nice to see a friendly face out here! The last bit of excitement was
the vang strap snapped, not as disastrous as it sounds as we had the preventer on reasonably tight, that in conjunction with the main sheet sort of does the same job of pulling the boom down. Anyhow the repair wasa simply a case of re-splicing a new strop onto the vang. Though rather frustratingly I kept on making it a bit too long so it took me 3 goes to get it right!

Today we are trying to get the boat in a better position to best tackle this wind hole which seems to be looming ahead of us, so we have our fingers crossed that we don't get stuck. Worst case scenario is that the boat is
stopped and we can all go for a swim! Must remember the boarding ladder though as that would be slightly embarrassing not being able to get back on board. it's always a good idea to chuck a line with a fender on the end too as the current has a tendancy to catch you unawares out here!

That's all to report today.

Ciao for now,
Matt, Gareth, Vadim, Sergey, Vitally, Max, Denis and Nikolay.
