Abigail - Abigail - 11-10 Report

Greetings from the merry crew of Abigail. It's a beautiful sunny day and we are headed straight for the finish line with 250 miles to go. That's quite a bit further away than we had hoped at this time, but yesterday was a very difficult day. The day began well enough with the numerous squalls we faced the night before seemingly behind us. But by late morning the squalls returned with a vengeance.

While we were dealing with squalls one of the bilge pumps started to back siphon (ie, put water in the boat instead of taking it out. This was resolved quickly enough, but not before it was the sloshing bilge water shorted out the battery charger and the freezer. This is added to the watermaker that quit working two days ago. This means we are running low on water, but should have enough to make it to the BVI. The worst calamity, however, was the reef patch on the mainsail that delaminated. By late afternoon we came to the conclusion that the main had to be dropped, so we pressed on with jib and jigger in light air. This morning we made temporary repairs to the main and now have it back in service. All in all not our best day out here.
