Last night I watched the sunset on the horizon in front of us, while Jacko
and Rob spotted shapes in the clouds – there was a dog with a very large head, a
gorilla eating a banana and a rabbit riding a motorcycle. It was the last sunset
of the 36th year of my life. Yup, today is my birthday - yeeeeeehaw! This
morning, as the sun rose behind us, the crew wished me a happy birthday and it
was decided that today we should celebrate by having a pirate theme day. Lo and
behold, Mel’s backpack was full of pirate hats and eye patches. With the help of
some magic marker tattoos and a few bruises from last weeks rocky seas, we’ve
transformed ourselves into a motley crew of sea faring pirates. Why are
pirates called pirates? Because they “arrrrgh”. I have had some
pretty memorable birthdays in my life, but this certainly ranks up there among
the top.
The crew have all given me such amazing gifts since I boarded the boat 10
days ago...
Mel’s spirit is always high and she never fails to laugh, even when
circumstances are rough.
Annette’s strength on deck and in the kitchen are inspirational. And, she
occasionally hums along with a beautiful voice to new songs as I try to learn
them. What a gift!
Rob’s helming at night, for hours and hours in total blackout conditions,
have revealed to me the fearless side of sailing.
Steve’s unending good humour and hard work have made him a worthy role
model for all on board! (not to mention the ‘oilies’ he so gratefully lends me
have kept me dry in biblical rains).
Terisa’s ability to care for people has made life on a boat, with often
involves uncomfortable conditions, feel a little more like life at home.
And of course Jacko, guiding us all toward St. Lucia, keeps a calm and cool
head in every situation, and has been a true skipper.
Thank you all for the gifts you bring to the boat!
A couple of days ago, during some quiet seas, the crew played "If you could
have any super-power, what would it be?” ... Terisa’s answer touched my heart as
she said, “I would be a wish granter, able to make anyone’s wish come true” ...
Well, for my 37th birthday, I wish for a continued happy and safe sail, all the
way to St. Lucia!

P.S. Today, being my birthday, I am obviously thinking of my family a lot.
I would like to send big hugs to my parents, brother and sister. I love you
guys.
