Oynas - End of Leg 1 - Las Palmas to Mindelo
After 6 days and 860NM we rushed down between the islands and arrived in
Mindelo... just in time to refuel, berth ‘Oynas’ and head to the ‘official
welcome’! The first day was pretty rough and seasickness remedies were in
order. Day 2 saw us having to motor! By Day 3 all appetities were
back. We crossed into ‘the tropics’ and passed the halfway mark so
rewarded the crew with dessert that night – a traditional kiwi favourite –
pavlova. On the morning we had left Las Palmas we had swopped our passeral
(gangway) for a (slightly bent) spinnaker pole. On day 4 Russell and the
boys lashed this to the mast and we poled out the genoa! Yeeha ... much less
‘flogging’! On the last morning we found a flying fish lying in front of
the oven on the galley floor. It must’ve dived in through the galley
hatch. Next time I will leave a frypan on the stove ready for it!
