GMT-1: With 5 nautical miles left to the finish line, Cape
Verde feels so close we can almost touch it! We’re all in the cockpit, ready to
set our feet on solid ground and are of course fighting over the honor of who
saw land first. Earlier today we had a good go on deck with a bucket and a few
loads of sea water. That Sahara desert has really made itself comfortable. The
sand is still all over the place, on ropes and wires and in between all kinds of
surfaces we didn’t even know existed. Let’s just say there’s no doubt what angle
the wind came from.
With
Hejira right behind us, Sara Ulrikke beating us with a few miles, the day has
been a good one with some added excitement of closing up on Cape Verde. Or what
I thought was a good day, until I crossed paths with an unfriendly can of tomato
sauce. It’s my day to cook, and I decided to put burritos on the menu. An easy
meal to cook, and seriously delicious. The rice was ready, the meat was cooking
and guacamole was in the making when I left the can of tomato sauce unattended
for about 9 seconds on the counter, with the lid slightly opened. Mom, if you’re
reading this, I would like to apologize in advance for any potential red spots
you may stumble upon behind the stove, on the floor, in the ceiling, on your
computer or really just anywhere in the saloon area. Or on me. I took a shower
and I think I got it all off, but honestly I’m experiencing a constant smell of
tomatoes and I think it’s me.
Other
than an evil can of tomatoes, an unfortunate squid, some loose shackles and
tough news from home, the life at sea has treated us well and we are already
excited to start the next leg. Although right now we’re excited about the land
closing up on us; Africa!
Sailing for Hope,
