Hello World,
The good ship EH01 is now over her first 24 hour sail in this year’s ARC
race. We had a fantastic send off yesterday. Many people were cheering and
singing, DJs were playing while all the boats were leaving the marina in Las
Palmas. EH01 crew was very excited and ready to sail across the big pond.
The start was amazing with hundreds of boats circling around outside the
marina waiting for their respective starts. It was a fairly breezy day and
we encountered even more after the first 2-3 hours of the race. The wind picked
up to 35-40 knots in the acceleration zone on the south-east side of the island
which kept boats and their crews on their toes. Boats were broaching, dropping
sails around us, kites were blown up so it was definitely an action packed
afternoon.
We also had a few little issues with changing sails and putting reefs in,
however we managed to overcome all our problems. We spent the night with only
our headsail up so that the crew could settle into the night watch routine and
get comfortable with driving the boat. Especially, that it was a fairly busy
night with squalls arriving one after the other.
However, today is a new day with the sun out and a big smile on our faces.
We are now back in full power, doing about 9 knots SOG and slowly catching up
with our fleet.....because we never give up!
Until tomorrow, the EH Crew
