FAR OUT!
closest land:
Cayenne, Surinam (remember Papillon?): 742nm = 1,374km
St. Lucia: 929nm = 1,720km
Cape Verdes: 1151km = 2,132km
don’t forget down: 4022m (not much use to us and no intention of going there)
Well over 1000km any way you look over the endless water, it is surreal.
Half an hour ago the satellite system failed. That would have meant no more blogs, no more emails. That would have put us not only far out, but also out of contact, what a scary thought. All due to a contact problem in a small wire (fortunately quickly found, otherwise you would not be able to read this).
We frequently sit here and wonder about the contraption we are in, sporting virtually all amenities of home: stove and oven (dinner in 10 minutes), coffee maker, HiFi system, video screen, 4 fridges, etc. etc.
It is absolutely weird when you think about it. We are well protected from the elements and feel absolutely safe. Biggest danger seems to be tripping in a swell and hurting yourself. Nothing serious has happened so far, although we do step on each others feet very regularly,
What else:
1) fishing discontinued as a result of massive amounts of Saragossa weeds in the water, tangling up the lines
2) For dinner: George’s roast (little competition on roasts there between Dave and him – results of the competition to be published tomorrow)
3) winds still above 20kt making it impossible to use the Gennaker, slowing us down, hence we only average 6.6kt.
Currently we are hoping to reach St. Lucia around Dec. 2
Klaus
PS I got confused there with the days - yes this is the 8th day of travel since Mindelo
