Bluewaft Log Day 9
Monday 28 November 2016
20°38’.565N 031°40’.854W
Another day with no wind. True wind speed 2.5-4kts from the SW. Flat
seas. With the afternoon breeze picking up to 7-8kts we motor sail with
the jib to coax an extra 0.5kt, but for the last 12 hours even that hasn’t
added anything. The only good news is a decent current of up to 1kt.
We saw the lights of a couple more boats last night but by the morning we
had lost sight of them. We understand a number of boats have called into
Cape Verde to refuel / wait out the calm weather.
We have used the time to get on top of our housekeeping. Checked and
tightened the rudder arms, checked and emptied the bilges, checked engine
oil and belt tightness, moved halyard on main, checked chain plates. We’ve
also been closely monitoring our fuel consumption and, fingers crossed,
still have enough... We’re hoping for some usable wind by Wednesday.
Nature wise, not a bite. Not even dolphins today. We are seeing the
occasional flying fish, and they seem to be getting larger. But none of
them managed to fly on deck last night, so our plan for a flying fish
breakfast (or at least fresh bate) were also scuppered. We have befriended
a petral though. She rests at night on the starboard aft deck, leaving a
nice old mess to clean up in the morning!
The food has been keeping us interested. Yesterday lunch it was pizza (I
even made a salad to go with it). For ‘Sun-Downers’ we had some of
Magali’s home-made Lemoncello (with Lemons from Andraxt). It was certainly
lemony and not too sweet. For Dinner last night Alex made a chicken
curry. We followed all this up with a couple of episodes of ‘Fawlty
Towers’ and ‘Flight of the Conchordes’.
Hoping for better luck today on the wind and the fishing. We’ve even put a
third rod out! To kill the boredom we’ll probably watch a few more films
(‘Perfect Storm’, ‘The Guardian’, ‘Master & Commander’ to keep the nautical
theme going…).
Cheers
