Musings on an Atlantic Crossing, 1

A Day of Chaos and a Night of Peace

Anchor stowed and dinghy deflated
Last-minute provisions swiftly uncrated
Just shove them anywhere down below
The ARC starts now, we’ve got to go!

Sail cover off and chart plotter on
Where’s our bloody log book gone?
I wish we’d had time to service the winches
Should we worry the waterline’s raised by six inches?

Farewells are hugged and lines set to slip,
We’re off! A flotilla of bright-sailed ships
To cheers from the shoreside, blown kisses and waves
... Nothing but sea now for twenty-five days

night falls
the moon rises
silvering the clouds
our fleet just scattered lights on calm sea
a soft warm breeze nudges us
across the wide ocean
together
alone
