Adagio - From Adagio (U.S.A.) #6: 11/29/2018
6: 11/29/2018: Thursday
Log Entry: 0746: "Gorgeous ball of orange climbing out of the sea". Yeah, that's worth working an early morning watch for :).
Today I decided to try to address the watermaker issue ... by thinking about it all day. It's a puzzler but boils down to only tow possibilities; the drive motor has died or the high pressure pump has seized/died. Either way it will be a real challenge to try to resurrect the watermaker aboard, because of both the sailing conditions and the dearth of spare parts. The drive motor is a big 24 Volt football-sized unit and the high pressure pump is a mechanical wristwatch like mystery to me. But I've always been of the mindset that if it ~is~ broken, it's worth trying to fix and you can't really do it much more harm since it was already dead.
So, I sent off a couple of emails via SSB and asked a friend to seek out some 'likely scenario' advice about how to proceed. The biggest problem will be trying to establish a workspace where a 12 kilo steel motor with sharp edges won't slide around and chew up persons or boat.
That's why I decided to think about it for a while :)
Today is "Confetti Day" aboard Adagio. During our travels we always abide strictly by the regs for waste management at sea. We never, ever let anything plastic or petroleum overboard and se we are met with a storage challenge after several days. Everything, it seems, is packaged in plastic these days and while we choose to purchase our water bottles in the 6 litre size (versus case upon case of individual sized bottles) it still presents us with a challenge.
Enter confetti day ... dovetailing on the "don't you get bored?" question of earlier, we will take all our plastic waste and, with scissors and knife, cut it all into very small pieces. The pieces then get stored in one of the empty 6.5 liter bottles until we can get to a recycler location.
Normally, we nearly immediately refill empty water bottles from the watermaker, this keeps our reserves up and our worries down. But, the first one used (mostly for coffee & tea) gets designated as the confetti bottle. It's stored where a full water bottle would have been located anyway so it takes up no additional room. Cool, huh??
OK, the best part of the day was the chili dog dinner. And that is all about Robin's chili .. don't bother to ask for a sample, because I'm not likely to share any way :)
