Makara of Exe - Dec 4th - Sailing my emotions
As we pass our mid Atlantic waypoint with 1650 miles to go, like Odysseus, I am humbled by the range of feelings I have experienced since setting out on our voyage just 8 days ago.
Day 5 for example started miserably with a faulty rudder and the spectre of retirement, a long beat back to Gran Canaria and ruined Christmas plans. Our mood was grim but the gods favoured us in the form of Sat phone conversation with a friend who was able to provide a solution so that we could continue our journey safely. Later, a pod of dolphins accompanied us to celebrate our triumph and this made our hearts sing.
I rejoice in the affectionate bond our crew has built as we navigate this unique experience together. It has been an exhausting and exhilarating roller coaster ride of emotions and we still have 1650 miles to go!
I feel honoured to be part of the Makara of Exe crew, may the gods continue to bless us and all the other ARC crews as we steam across this amazing, unforgiving and remarkable ocean. JR
