By the light of the full moon I sit Shiva tonight for dear old “Pi”. Captain, as ship’s chief medical officer spent three hours this afternoon employing heroic life saving measures and wielding his extreme wizardly engineer skills all to try to revive Pi, but to no avail. At 14:58 Captain had to call it. One dead auto pilot. Probable cause of death: overwork. The sobering reality of facing at least ten more days of round the clock hand steering casts a pall over us. We’ve been mostly hand steering since 11:30 on Friday, the 11th, always with the hope that Pi would recover. Now we’re resigned to hand steering the rest of this journey.
