Uno - Day 4: Poke bowls & Atlantic swims!
Checked the YB Races app as we do when we put the Internet on in the morning (and in the evening to get the new weather routing from PredictWind), and noticed we had actually moved up a few places to 119th - whoop! Don’t like our chances of holding that though because it is a super super quiet, low wind day, and without a parasailor - or even just a really big sail - we will either be going very slowly or motoring. (Ended up Motoring from 12-6pm. Really wishing we’d bought a big sail now!)
We caught two mahi-mahi today, one that Jacques (11) reeled in solo whilst we were in the midst of turning up wind to raise the main this evening. He brought it in all by himself & then insisted on learning to fillet it. He ended up watching Rich teach Kenny do one side, then he did the other. So cool! The other bigger fish jumped on the line while we were winding in the hand line to put it away for the night at about 730pm. Totally unexpected, Kenny was wondering why the line felt so heavy. Now we have a fish stash for tomorrow night’s mahi mahi burger dinner that I’ll be making! It was a super hot day today, weather cleared right up and it was a very calm sea. Lynnie said she’s never imagined an ocean could be so calm out this far. We had to motor most of the day but it meant that we all jumped off the bow & in to the water for a swim around lunch time! It was AMAZING! So blue & so clear, 3500m we estimated as we were between the 2k and 5k contour lines. Later on it was still calm enough to do a yoga routine on the bow, felt good to stretch even if it was stinking hot. The crew with colds are coming right -yay! Everyone else seems fine. Looking through the binoculars this afternoon, we spotted something black on the horizon, turned out to be a black fishing flag attached to a buoy, so unusual to see something like that out this far. Tonight for night watch we are maintaining just 3 x 4 hour shifts to make sure everyone gets back to 100% health. For dinner tonight we had poke bowls with chicken, mango, avocado & veggies made by Gisele (12) — delish! They would have been mahi-mahi poke bowls, except that we only caught the fish after we had defrosted the chicken.
We played a few games of bananagrams in the cockpit which was fun, read books and baked our first two loaves of sourdough of this crossing.
