Adrienne - Was Sie schon immer übers Halsen wissen wollten… (frei nach Woody Allan)

Blog Adrienne November 25th, 2023
Blog writer: Bernd and Mark
After a “magical night” (Steffi quote), the day began with a long breakfast, as always. Then an equally magical day of sailing followed, which carried us almost towards St. Lucia with winds of up to 22 knots from the NE and peaks of up to 10 knots. The gusts of the last few days were missing, which also made it easier for the helmsmen.
It was also shower day (the second since the start, just as a reminder: we have wellness days here on board on Wednesday and Saturday).
Apart from various schools of flying fish, some of which can be carried over hundreds of meters over the waves, there was no wildlife to be seen and our fishing luck wasn't kind to us today either.
So that we didn't get bored due to this uneventful situation, the ship's command asked us to correct the course using a gybe, which we will go into in more detail below. This also happens at the express request of a questioner from the large circle of our fans.
The goal for the morning maneuver was not to beat yesterday's time of approx. 1h 27m 35s. To say it in advance: we clearly succeeded!!
About the maneuver itself. You have to know that as a trade wind sail we are using two headsails (of which the large one is boomed out) and a mainsail secured with a bullstand. The sequence of steps is as follows:
Tighten the sheet of the unfurled foresail (solent) and at the same time release the halyard. Raise the
sails. Release the bullstand.
Raise
the mainsail, first taking it tight and then sailing it again very quickly, but in a controlled manner, on the new bow.
Bullenstander The sheet is released from the genoa boom again
, the topnant is lowered and the vang is tightened.
Shifting the genoa boom to the new windward side
Rolling up the genoa
Latching the genoa sheet into the genoa boom
Adjusting the height of the boom using the topnant and vang
Rolling out the genoa while simultaneously controlling the reefing line
Setting the solent again
As you can easily see from this list , the sheer number of work steps creates an unimaginable number of opportunities to make mistakes. This combined with the number of people involved in the maneuver increases this even further. Our unerring way of making at least one of the conceivable mistakes at every step ultimately culminated in the already mentioned total time for the process yesterday. According to the principle “you can jump high from a squat,” significant improvements have already been noticed today. Current time record: 17m 44.5s.

As a reward after this brilliant performance, we got a movie night with popcorn, nuts and no beer. The film “Company Pettycoat” was shown, which Bernd saw in the cinema when it premiered in 1959. Anyone who knows the film (Google helps again) will understand the discussion about whether pink wouldn't also be a nice color for Adrienne.12
