The first week

We departed the wonderful Las Palmas a week ago with mixed emotions, excited about the journey but sad that we were leaving such a great place and new friends.

The first couple of days were unfortunately taken over by the skipper having a very upset stomach that left him incapacitated for around 24 hours, luckily the crew rose to the challenge and kept Sofa on track.

The first week has really been dominated by the very changeable weather but we have now got trade winds which hopefully will now scoot us over to Saint Lucia.

We’ve seen a fair amount of wildlife although not as much as we were really expecting and the first flying fish was found on deck when we went for a gybe on Saturday morning - yuk. A Mahi Mahi was caught and duly eaten after being baked by Shaz.

Sharon’s idea to freeze as many meals has been very thought out and we have different delights every day. Saturday we had homemade ice cream on cake which was a great treat (thanks to Claire on Portlish for the recipe).

Cinnamon the parrot has made himself at home even down to stealing the peanut butter.

Our downwind setup of twin headsails is working well although rather complex to gybe is leading to us having to do some careful planning especially before the sun sets to make sure that we have the right configuration for the night sails. We are trying to thread a needle at present to stay in a small line of wind that will keep us in the trades, I’ll let you know next week if we were successful.

All in all a good first week and hopefully now that we’re in the trades the journey will continue safely and swiftly.
