Adina - blog Day 14 - The latest whodunnit is ‘who ate all the digestives?’
Adina - blog Day 14 - The latest whodunnit is ‘who ate all the digestives?’
Today has brought another sunny day to Adina and her crew - wind 10-15kts from the east and we have increased our average speed by half a knot or so. The crew have a sweepstake in place for arrival time at Rodney Bay, but with over 1200 miles still to go there is ample opportunity for a delay. Yesterday saw us travel 147 miles, just short of our target of 150 miles a day. It has been two days since we saw another boat, but we keep in contact with other yachts by radio.
Over the last few days we have noticed a significant increase in seaweed and in the early hours of this morning we had to unburden the Watt&Sea turbine, called Moaning Lisa, as she started to wail in protest. We fear she may now need regular attention to keep her quiet. Her close friend, Lucy the hydrovane, continues to deliver day after day and we were surprised to see that barnacles had started to stick to her bottom. On arrival in St Lucia we will ensure she receives a full exfoliation and deep clean!
Many stars were out last night as we sailed towards Jupiter in the west. We again welcomed Venus, the masthead light, over from the SE - and she happily drew up alongside us until she disappeared at dawn.
Shortly after dawn this morning Andy and Pete set out to catch fish again. Within minutes reels were singing as a large fish took their lure and headed for the deep, despite Pete turning the boat into the wind to reduce the strain on the line, the reel ran and the fish broke away allowing it to fight another day. More lures have been ordered but sadly Amazon do not deliver to the mid Atlantic.
Despite this setback, we are all looking forward to a fish extravaganza tonight created by Pete, ‘Chef de la Bateau’ - he believes it will be a load of old pollock!
We are sad to report that we have had our first breadmaker failure - after vigorous testing and assessment the wooden spoon is firmly pointed at the Spanish flour - Harina de Trivigo, purchased in Las Palmas prior to departure. Once we have consumed Mr Allinsons UK supply we may need to freestyle our recipe to continue production.
During the last few days we have added a sweet course to our evening meals - the bananas and custard or cheese and biscuits were delightful.
Carole is going for a tin dive later this afternoon so what wonders will she unearth in the store cupboards?
Pete’s lost Digestives have been recovered and have now been placed under 24 hour guard to protect them from Andrew.
We have replaced red or white wine with concentrated blackcurrant or orange squash and this is being well received by all as a change from straight water.
