Bluejay - Blog 28.11

 Blog28th Nov

The last 24 hours have been quite eventful on Bluejay! Yesterday we had freshly baked cake with our afternoon tea and at 1700 hrs we caught a Mahi Mahi/Dorado fish. It was a medium size and I gutted and filleted it on the Port Aft deck. This boosted morale quite a bit since the wind Was dying down. 1900 hrs, after a healthy Fish curry dinner, Alex, our Skipper, offered to do a session on Weather routing. We were all in the cockpit when the cry - FISH-ON- was heard. My crew mates told me to get changed back into my previous clothes when I was gutting the Mahi and two crew hauled the Atlantic Tuna (3-5 kilos) onto the deck and into a bucket. Under the instructions of a crew mate who was experienced in big game fishing, I managed to kill the fish ethically and debone and cut the meat into Tuna fillets. All the crew were in jubilant mood and consensus was that we will re-schedule Alex's session for the next day. The catching, processing and cleaning up afterwards was a great team effort in which everyone participated. This morning I was on the early watch 0700-1000 hrs. The sea state was calm, no major swell. We had a big pod (15-20) of dolphins join us and they were playing in Bluejay's bow waves whilst the Sun was slowly rising from the ocean. I can truly say that from a sailor's perspective, it really doesn't get better than that!! Once most of the crew had their breakfast we hoisted the Spinnaker around 0920 hrs this morning and at the time of writing (1135) it's still going and we are making good speed (5.2 Knots). As You can read it has been a fascinating experience on Bluejay, particularly in the last 24 hrs. my watch had their first shower on board (I have no more fishy smells!) and at present life is good in great company. Hope to see you at our next blog episode tomorrow.
