Bluejay - Blog 04/12/24

Wednesday 4th December

We had the 2200-0100 watch, which flew by literally. We had big following seas and a good breeze which meant that we could surf the swells which was a fantastic experience. One crew member on their watch clocked 16 knots surfing down the waves! I only managed 12.5 Knots but the surfing was the best. Last evening/night was the first time that we encountered squalls. During my helming stint we ended up with a squall that was unavoidable. It became very wet and a little windy. I asked the 1st mate what the squall tactics are and she replied: 'Don't let go of the wheel, knuckle down and grin and bear it, we'll be through it very fast' Good advice which I applied and personally I found it quite manageable to cope with. The 1st Mate gave me regular updates looking at the radar when the squall would hit, and once in it, she updated on how much longer the squall was with us. Overall it wasn't the hair-raising experience that I expected and I'm happy with the experience.

This morning the skipper notified us that we managed to keep our speed up and we had sailed 200 NM in 24 hrs. This resulted in a cheering crew, proud of the achievement. We know we're not really racing, but still. The skipper also informed us that the Head skipper of Rubicon 3 had notified all crew's next of kin to reassure them that Bluejay's crew were safe and well. Personally, this was very much appreciated since my wife and I decided not to maintain connection and contact during the actual crossing.

Well, ship mates, time to sign off from the morning edition of Bluejay's blog. I have just been given a Chilli and vegetable wrap and there is mentioning of fresh fruit salad afterwards. See you soon.
