Hummingbird Blog
Friday 6 December 2024
Greetings!
Its Friday (or
FriYAY!) as my wife calls it.
Lots of chatter
amongst the crew about what they were going to get up to this weekend and
strangest of coincidences we are all going sailing
, what are the odds!? That is apart from one of said crew who
is apparently playing centre forward for the Korean ladies football (soccer to
the colonials) team in China!! Well
in his most vivid of dreams any way.
Routine is the
key, the watch systems rotate and the crew attend their watches diligently, eat,
sleep, chat, play music and repeat.
The meals have been amazing so far despite the challenges faced by the
duty galley teams. The only major
variables (apart from some eclectic playlists and the menu) are the wind and the
sea state which has been kind and fulfilling during the days and downright
feisty on occasions during the night when we get the odd squall passing
through.
We also crack on
with routine maintenance during the run with engine checks, winch maintenance
and sail repairs all involving the crew wherever possible. The slick sailing machine that is SY
Hummingbird and her crew are firing on all cylinders and ticking off the
miles. As I write we are less than
900 nautical miles from our destination with an ETA of somewhere between the
11-12 December subject to the winds of course.
We await our
daily weather forecasts from the Arc team and Grib files from the Head Shed at
Rubicon3 with keen anticipation and pore over them in detail when they arrive
endeavouring to interpret their information into the most efficient route to St
Lucia.
Ultimately the
mention of landfall in St Lucia enables all kinds of conversations about ice
cold Piton Beers, Pinacoladas and Dark n Stormys and conjures images of the
trusty crew of SY Hummingbird giving that first cold cold drink just enough time
to watch in fascination as the condensation forms on the glass before downing it
with relish, (See Ice Cold in Alex starring Sir John Mills ).
Thats all for
now folks,
Alex
