BRIZO - Daily Log Tuesday 17 Jan 2012

Although we are facing another day of high winds and heavy seas we are all doing well. Last night was fairly uneventful, one close crossing with an AIS ship listed as "Carrying Extremely Dangerous Cargo". The girls have consumed countless bags of microwave popcorn while watching movies and pre-recorded TV shows on Corinne's computer. Small amounts of schoolwork now and then but we have a bit of catching up to do.

The biggest decision today will be wether we stop in the San Blas Islands for the rally rendezvous Wednesday afternoon or continue on to Shelter Bay at the entrance to the Panama Canal. Since there are no navigational lights whatsoever in the San Blas we can only enter during daylight, our current arrival time would be during the night tonight so we would have to slow down at some point. A potentially big problem is the large seas which will be following us into the shallow areas of the islands, this could make entering the unmarked channels very tricky and/or dangerous. We are trying to get some information from Rally Control regarding the local sea state conditions to understand the extent of this challenge. In addition, we need to get to Shelter Bay on Friday regardless so that Lew can get his flight back to Cleveland on Sunday morning. We expect to have a crew meeting later this morning to evaluate our options.

The girls have both prepared reports for their classmates regarding the initial leg of the journey, we just need to get the reports typed into the computer for transmission via Sailmail.
