First Night at sea
Yesterday afternoon we saluted Bermuda without much
regrets. The island is wonderful, colorful and manicured in true English
fashion and the people very friendly. But is also VERY expensive and to get
anything done to your boat is a nightmare. Parts are scarce and workers very
busy and unreliable. We had to replace the batteries and we had to content
ourselves with a set made of three different types jury rigged in the allocated
space. We crossed our fingers, paid an exorbitant bill and left. The good news
is that so far they seem to be working better than I expected.
We left the
harbor with the usual impeccable start well managed by the ARC people and set
the course on the Azores. After much deliberating we chose the grand circle
route, i.e. the straight line instead of
the usual north course before turning east. We did that to avoid the low
pressure zone that is coming our way on the northern side. The first hour we
motored and then we pick up a small breeze that gave us 4/5 kn. It is then that
we hooked two tunas! Hurry, hook, down the sail ready to land them. Francesco
had the first problem. After a short fight the fish chose to leave us behind, a
better choice than the frying pan …. for him. I landed mine and Pino duly
hooked it, but then decided that it was bleeding too much and dipped it in the
water, still on the hook and the fish with a fast wagging of his tale wished
him good bye! The skipper (me!) showed a strong disapproval.
Just as the
night was falling the wind started to pick up and what a night that gave us! 20
to 25 kn winds and a sea that seemed to boil like a kettle. Ninfea was pretty
beaten up by the chop and Francesco at a certain point was catapulted from his
cot right on top of Paolo. None of us was able to get much sleep at all.
Today we
are making peace with the ocean, the wind having lowered to a more manageable breeze. We rest
recovering some of the sleep and continue to hop along at a better then decent
7 to 8kn.

Per gli
amici italiani
Abbiamo lasciato finalmente Bermuda per il trasferimento
alle Azzorre. Ci siamo lasciati dietro l’isola senza molti rimpianti.
I broccoli li abbiamo
comprati dall’orefice!
Vento sopra i venti
Abbiamo preso scossoni a sfare
Ciao a
tutti.
