AFTER A DELAYD START ON THUSDAY THE 27.12.12 WITH MEDIUM STRONG WINDS WE SAILING DOWN THE COAST OF GRAN CANARIA TO THE SOUTHER POINT.AN EARLY GYBE TOOK US TO AN WESTERLY COURSE.IN THE NIGHT THE WIND BECAME STRONGER AND THE WAVES BECAME HIGHER 5-6 METERS,AN UNPREDICTED MANOUVER BROKE OUR MAINSAIL SO WE TOOK IT DOWN AND TIED IT TO THE BOOM.WE KEEPT SAILING ON WITH THE FORESAIL,GENUA II.
THE NEXT DAY WE SAW THE WHOLE DAMAGE AND DECIDED TO PUT UP THE TRY SAIL, A SMALL ORANGE COULERD MAIN.LATER WE COVERD THE MAIN AND PUT AN IMAGINARY SIGNE ON
“NOT TO BE USED FOR NAVIGATION”.
OUR COURSE TOOK US WESTERLY AND WE ALTERNETED THE GENUA II WITH THE GENNAKER DOING FAIRE SPEED.
THERE WAS NO NIGHT WITHOUT RAIN SHOWERS, BUT THE WIND KEEPT BLOWING QUITE STABLE 18-22 KNOTS.
ON A SOUTHERLY COURSE THE 6.12.12 WE WHERE SAILING THE WHOLE DAY UNDER A COMPLETE COVERD SKYWITH BIG GREY CLOUDS. THE BAROMETER KEEPT DROPPING.IT FALL FOR THE LAST 12 HOURES ABOUT 10 MILIBAR.SO WHEN THE STORM CAME WE WHERE WELL PREPARED.THE WIND PICKT UP IN THE EARLY EVENING AND RASED TO ABOUT 38 KNOTS FORM THE SE-ESE WITH HAVY RAIN FOR ABOUT 2 HOURES.WE KEEPT REEFING THE GENUA UNTIL WE HAD NEARLY NOTHING LEFT.AFTER THE WIND BECAME BLOWING NORMAL AGAIN
.THE NEXT DAY FOR A SHORT WILE OF CALM WINDS THE WIND TURNED TO N-NE AT THE USAL FORCE
WE ALREADY PASSED THE 1000 MILES DISTANCE WITH A LITTLE CELEBRATION, LOOKING FOR THE 1000 MILES MARK FOR THE FINISH.ITS VERY EXCITING TO SEE THE SMALL NUMBERS.NOW WITH 600.MILES TO GO WE KEEP ON GYBING SAILING WITH GOOD SPEED.THE E.T.A. IN SAINT LUCIA IS FRIDAY NIGHT.

Captain Gert Kunzendorf CREW of FRILAENS III
Hi Alexis saw your note at the board in gran canaries didn’t had the chance to know you.
You are one of the many people who come every year to gran canaries with a dream to find a passage across the Atlantic.
I took a picture from your work and once on the other side I will print it and pin it at the board in the Yacht Club and at the marina of Rodney Bay.
Don’t know if you find a boat but so something of you crossed.
It’s great that there are still people with a dream `.
If not this time there will be more luck next time
Wish all of you
All the best
Captain Gert Kunzendorf
