Crossing Biscay and rounding Cape Finesterre

Following the start of the 20th edition of ARC Portugal, the rally office is now open at the Monte Real Club Yates in Bayona, Spain. After light winds crossing the English Channel, the fleet entered the Bay of Biscay two days ago where winds were favourable from the West North West. Despite Biscays fierce reputation, crews were experiencing some of the highlights that sailing has to offer.

“Last night after crossing into deep water, the phosphorescence was like our own private disco with some inquisitive dolphins providing some additional light displays, seemingly wearing funky green neon...!” – Spirit III

Despite the spectacles of the ocean, crews have experienced some of the challenges that ocean sailing and crossingBiscay can pose including fishing lines wrapped around a propeller, damaged sails and water ingress.

As crews sailed a southerly course through Biscay, a developing low pressure system which was being closely monitored materialised causing the fleet to split and for many to take shelter north or south of Cape Finisterre. There they will wait for a weather window to continue their journey south to Bayona.

Yacht Nikitia, an Oyster 406 crossed the finish line at 0450 this morning joining Remedy of Mylor, a Fantasi 44 who have been patiently waiting for the rallies arrival since Sunday’s departure from Plymouth. As yachts continue to arrive, the shore side social programme will begin where crews have the opportunity to explore some of the fantastic sights of Europe’s western coastline.
