The boats arrived at Peniche during the late afternoon of the 21 June, after a long trip motoring down the coast of Portugal from Figueira da Foz, where unfortunately having said it was going to be a fishing competition, not one fish was caught! On arrival in Peniche participants had a free night to enjoy the lovely restaurants along the harbour shore.
Yesterday the participants enjoyed a tour of the Peniche Fort which was used as a political prison in the 18th century. The local council hosted a welcome reception at the fort, where some fun prizes were awarded. The only prize for this leg was the Smiley Miley, as the ETA competition was cancelled due to the foggy start. This time the best Smiley Miley was won by Kinni Rossi who missed the kilometre reading by just 3.5 kilometres. The worst Smiley Miley, who was to be presented the wooden spoon by the previous loser (Carnival), was presented to, again, Carnival.
After the prize giving, just a 10 minute walk to the Mari Mar restaurant where the participants enjoyed a 3 course meal, with a main course of either fish or steak.
This morning between 0800 and 0830 the ARC Portugal 2016 fleet set off on the 5th leg towards Oeiras, a 55 NM sail down the coast of Portugal towards Lisbon. Light winds to start off with but expected to get stronger as they approch Oeiras, 12/15 knots with gusts of 21. They should be arriving late this afternoon, where the ARC Portugal team will be waiting for them.
