Seminar
presentations for the ARC+ started today in Las Palmas and will continue
tomorrow Wednesday. All the ARC+ crews have been invited to listen to
experienced sailors and industry professionals sharing their knowledge on
differing topics to help them in their final preparations for their Atlantic
crossing.
The
morning session of seminars began with Chris Tibbs passing on advice of how to
prepare for and deal with emergencies which can happen on board. It was a
well-timed lecture because with a bit of preparation and thought now,
emergencies at sea can be dealt with far better, and with improved chances of a
better outcome. Topics covered included dismasting, fire, sinking and rudder
loss.
Next
Clare Pengelly passed on provisioning ideas and tips from her experience of ocean
sailing, including the replenishing options for food in the Cape Verde islands.
Andrew Bishop concluded the morning session with a lecture on Communications in
the ARC+.
Chris
Tibbs returned in the afternoon to pass on his tips for downwind sailing –
including different sail choices and set-ups and the last lecture of the day
was from Jerry, the Rigger. He reminded crews that it is the responsibility of everyone
on board to look after the boat's rig, and encouraged each crew member to carry
out a three minute rig check every day whilst at sea - being vigilant and
knowing the signs of wear to look for can make all the difference!
But
once all the work was done, crews gathered together for the first ARC+
Sundowners – a great time to have a drink or two sponsored by Embotelladora and sample some products from JP
Butchers and discuss the day’s programme.
ARC+ Safety
Demonstrations will take place on Thursday.
