Celebrations and Farewells in Lagos

Six weeks ago the fleet set off from the island of St Maarten on a steady ride to Bermuda where BYS & St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club did their best to accommodate us all in the town of St George’s.

The weather on passage from Bermuda to the Azores was quite consistent, especially for those that have chosen a route south of the rhumb line. But very challenging for those who chosen the northern route!

Was also here that some yachts were forced to delay their voyage and others that after 48 and 72 hours at sea had to return to port. Unfortunately, only a couple of these boats caught up with the rest of the fleet and we waived goodbye to Nakula, Melee, Oberoi and Vaughnderlust. Well done on those who caught up!

With nearly 30 boats, 4 different islands, several north Atlantic depressions, busy marinas and many independent sailing cruisers going in the same direction, delivering the Azores Cruise was always going to be a challenge. However, it was great to have the support and flexibility of skippers and crews to allow us to manage these challenges in the best way possible.

It was great to see the ARC Europe fleet arriving in Marina de Lagos, a prime marina distinguished by the sector’s world organization. https://www.marinadelagos.pt/marina-de-lagos

Ingrid and Martinho Fortunato, directors of Marina de Lagos, hosted a fantastic 3 course meal at Sunset Restaurant and had a gift to every boat. A beautiful clay serving dish, traditional of this Portuguese region. What a great memento to take away from Lagos!

We were low on numbers of yachts that took the start in Santa Maria but still awarded many prizes during the evening. For positional results, click here

A wonderful evening was held by all, and it was great to see many friendships starting off. This is Rally Control out!
