Known as the star in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has proved once again to be a memorable stop for the World ARC fleet. Greeted by the stunning view of mountains rising above the harbour the fleet has experienced friendly hospitality, diverse activities, and fascinating cultural mix during their stay.
Having experienced such a fantastically fast sail from Cocos Keeling, meant the fleet have had plenty of time to complete boat jobs, explore the island and visit the many shops and restaurants in the area. Being based at Le Caudan Waterfront provides convenient access to a variety of restaurants, hotels and food shops. It has been a welcome luxury after 2-weeks at sea.
Keeping to tradition the World ARC programme included a tour which offered a blend of nature, history, delicious lunch, and a rich experience of the local culture and Mauritian heritage. Beginning with a visit to the SSR Botanical Gardens the knowledgeable guide took the fleet on a magical walk through the thick canopy of giant palms, fruit trees and ancient trees. Next on the agenda was a visit to Sugar World to learn about the history of sugar production in Mauritius. After learning so much it was time to enjoy a leisurely 3-course lunch in the gardens of Le Table du Chateau. To complete the day, there was a private tour of the restored colonial mansion, Le Chateau de Labourdonnais.
The programme of events in Mauritius also included the all-important prizegiving. Overlooking Port Louis Harbour, under a Bedouin style tent, World ARC participants gathered to celebrate their crossings from Cocos Keeling to Mauritius. Honouring exceptional sailing skills and individual rally spirit, awards with flavours of Mauritius, were presented to the winners. Congratulations go to Iain Kirkpatrick and his family on board Fatjax, a Shipman 63, who completed the journey in just under 10 days. With a high handicap, they were having to keep up the pace, but they managed to cross the line in good time ensuring they took first place in Cruising Division A. X-Yacht 50, Brainwave proudly took second place closely followed by Skyelark 2.
Division B was won by Andy and Heej on their Farr 50, Kaja. They had an amazing sail and are to be especially congratulated as they are double handers. Hot on their heels coming in second was Ian, Fiona and Harri on Asante and in third place, Martin and Caron on Escapade of London, another double handed boat!
As the main effort to circumnavigate the world continues, the fleet departed Le Caudan Waterfront today, Tuesday 29 October, for the short journey of just 130NM to the island of Reunion.
The fleet created quite a sight as they gathered at the entrance to the Harbour. With winds of around 8-10 kts it was a starboard tack through the line. The agile Fatjax took the line first closely followed by Asante and then Sea Monster. The sail to Reunion is expected to take around 20 hours so most of the fleet will reach Le Port at lunchtime tomorrow, Wednesday 30 October.
As the fleet dance through the tankers to the south of the harbour and out into the Indian Ocean to a new destination, they depart thanking Caudan Development Ltd and Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority for their generous contributions to ensure the continued success of World ARC’s visit to Mauritius.
