Grenada - The handsome Spice Island

A Spicy Island

Grenada is arguably one of the most charming of the Caribbean islands and offers a hugevariety of things to do and see. From the World ARC’s base in Port Louis, St Georges, on the western shore of the islands, there are plenty of places to see, activities to do and restaurants, museums and even distilleries to visit. Grenada has its golden beaches and palm trees but also a rich history which reflects its interesting past and governance.

Countless writers have described St George's as the prettiest capital in the Caribbean and it really is a stunning setting. The horseshoe of the Carenage runs around the harbour and is home to several waterside restaurants. The town itself has a wide range of shops and stores as well as many historic buildings to visit. The town and market are within a walk or short bus ride from the marina in which the fleet will be berthed.

For further exploration, which will be done during a tour provided by the Grenada Board of Tourist, the island has much to offer. There is the lush green interior of the Grand Etang National Park and Forest with its crater lake and island views. In the north east there is the Belmont Estate, a protected area of land used for the cultivation of cocoa and spice. Its possible to visit the spice farms where every imaginable herb and spice grows in profusion. Here are also the rum distilleries, producing local spirit from the local sugar cane.

And for those who enjoy exploring underwater, Grenada also has many fantastic options for diving; from wrecks to coral gardens and even an underwater sculpture park. Fantastic!

The Spice Island will surely be an enjoyable stopover for all the World ARC participants.
