Rally Portugal participants are always grateful to the Horizons children's sailing charity, who kindly provide a shuttle bus service from Mayflower Marina to the supermarket and city centre in exchange for coin donations. However, many may not be aware of the important work that Horizons undertake in the local community, and how their donations are put to work.
Despite its enviable position almost encircled by water, Plymouth is not a wealthy city, and levels of social deprivation are high in comparison to other southern cities. Horizons gives children from deprived backgrounds and those with disabilities an opportunity to get out on the water; to see their city from a new angle; to see the warships that are so vital to the economy; and most importantly, to learn new skills and build confidence.
Sailing is a great way to engage with youngsters. Being out on the water is often the only opportunity that some kids have to make decisions and take responsibility for themselves, and of course, its fun! 10 year old Harry says "Sailing is fun at Horizons - everyone should come and have a go".
Horizons has 20 boats, from a 31 motorboat to 20' keelboats and a wide range of dinghies. This allows the volunteers to provide training from basic skills through to RYA Instructor awards. During the week the charity works with local schools and youth groups, and in the school holidays offers adventurous sailing and RYA training courses. One of the most popular activities is the Out of School Sailing Club on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings, which is an all-ability sailing 'youth club'.
