Paula Rosa - Saturday 8th December – Paula Rosa

Saturday 8th December – Paula Rosa Could this be the last blog J or do I tell you what its like to get our feet onto steady ground? Well it’s been a long and frustrating 72 hours, some very glum faces.Early last night the wind returned and we turned the stink off (after 3 hours – motoring will be added to our high handicap, I’m afraid I cant explain how its all worked out especially with that naughty Umiko!) Sails were hoisted back up (main and jib, as there were probably a few more squalls to get through) speed wise averaging 8knots! David and I got pretty wet, not cold though, we had 28 knots under the dark edge of a monster. Few stars for us, luckily we had a brilliant diamond show the night before. This morning Wills is very keen to go for it on the last push as. read more...

Paula Rosa - Friday 7th December – Paula Rosa

Friday 7th December – Paula Rosa Slow slow slow quick  slowwwwww…..The only speed is made by the squalls, some we get wet but we also get a little extra wind and believe me we need every breath we can get at the moment! As a bonus in between the squalls the stars are spectacular, we can even see the Southern Cross. Venus is so bright it is making up for the no show moon and even casting a beautiful shimmer across the water. Everyone getting a little bit frustrated but we are creeping along closer to the finish!!  There is increasing amounts of weed in the water and apparently it is a big problem on the beaches in the Caribbean (Wills is peering over my shoulder and smirking – not quite sure why!!) Chris tells us it is  Sargassum and a result of warming sea. read more...

Paula Rosa - Thursday 6th December – Paula Rosa

Thursday 6th December – Paula  Rosa The green glow or flash– in case you are wondering if the salt is really getting to me or the lack of alcohol is having delirious effects…a phenomenon that is apparently disbelieved by some although I’m sure not by the scientists! David and I have seen the green glow a few times now in the Caribbean first and most recently spectacularly on our epic trip to Antarctica. I think the horizon has to be perfectly clear and something to do with light rays being bent, not sure where the green comes from?Anyway last night we were not really expecting to see it so it was such a treat when it appeared, bright green for just a few seconds before it sank down into the sea – more magic! As the first early watch of the night started it was super starry. read more...

Paula Rosa - Wednesday 5th December – Paula Rosa

Wednesday 5th December – Paula Rosa In bed by 9pm so I’m bright and breezy getting up for the dreaded 3 am watch. Will hopefully dream of stars and such things but for some reason wake at 01.10 in a panic I’ve missed my watch, maybe days at sea are having their effect! 3 am and its very dark, very few stars just dark clouds scudding overhead bringing bursts of wind that give us an average speed of 12knots and in a good direction.  Paula Rosa sings…. well hums, it is such a lovely noise, of course D thinks it is the rudders vibrating when the boat goes fast!! I think Paula Rosa just loves the ocean and spinning along so effortlessly! Back in bed by 6am and looking forward to a couple of hours sleep before my day actually begins. Thud, thud, thud on the foredeck above, for. read more...
