Amulet - First Report

Ours is a tale of 2 types of crew. The cruisers/leasure trippers and the rouge racer on board. 10 min before our start 2 of the cruisers (c) were at the restaurant having a beer and salad. Racer(R) was pacing the boat tapeing meat-hooks. We were the last boat on our pier to depart, and the band had quit. during provisioning the c's were loading copious quantities of everything a feasting King might desire while R was agast at the gluttony, knowing we would be feeding the fish along the route. Diesel and water was toppedand then some; R believes we could power all the way and have enough consumable liquids to sustain a non-stop circumnavagation. After the start and working our way up to the front of our class, R went off watch to cook dinner (over baked enchiladas barely edible but hot).. read more...

Amulet - Log day 4

Light winds are the bane of our existance currently. We have carried the A sail for the last 36 hours as R resists starting the engine which many have. However the c's are winning the battle over auto vs hand steering. This changed @ 0500 when the drive pin sheared. There seems to be at least one daily repair to accomplish, which helps keep us busy. The c's have grumbled about lack of reading time. Our captain prepared a fine polenta meal and R was pleased to see a couple more wine bottles(no boxes here) go overboard. Today the slow boat speed proved ideal trolling, and we will be consuming a nice Mahi-Mahi for dinner. Cudows to our Fakawhi captain.. read more...

Amulet -

Slipping along in the mid Atlantic, still waiting for the trades to fill in. When we adjust off the rum line to follow a new weather report, invariably the place we left has more wind the next day. The c's desire a pause to take in a quick swim as the water is very warm, but R resists, and is even reluctant to fish as we are finishing the last one for stew today. Its hard to haul in a wopper when you are doing 6 knots. Washing dishes is vied for as it breaks the tedium. Brightwork and lifelines are polished and sparkling now. Hope we don't run out of diesel for the generator. Still have enough food for the next 6 months.. read more...

Amulet - Daily Log

If you had told me a month ago that we would be DRIFTING in the trade winds making bread in a bread machine, and having ice in our drinks I would have thought you crazy. However the coup hit me today when the skipper fired up a vaccum cleaner. WAY too much luxury on this trip. It will progress slower yet now that we have blown out our only spinnaker. Baking cake and cookies tomorrow.. read more...

Amulet -

The preventor breaking and the resulting roundup last nite in 30 knots has caused us to back down a little. Reefs are in and we hover around 6 knots under main and jib wing & wing. Sleep has also been interupted trying vainly to stop all the loose gear banging noises. The mid Atlantic is far from flat. We wanted wind, although the occilations create very confused waves. Spirits are good (despite the unlikelyness of finishing with silver) and there's plenty of food left.. read more...
