Fenix II is an Enderlein design Hallberg Rassy 42, 1986 hull number 144, sloop rigged. The previous owner installed a new 106HP Volvo, extended her stern with a sugar scoop and installed a massive davit. Upon taking ownership in 2003 we did further upgrades: removed the aft head to create a glamorous owner’s cabin with a desk and armchair, modernized the saloon, added an “invisible” crane to lift on and off our scooter, added a custom made SS navigation display, a new anchor (Rocna), a one-touch electrical toilet, installed a water leak alarm, changed the rigging, installed a second backup autopilot, 3 GPSs, and AIS (sending and receiving), a sea anchor, and an automatic freshwater shut down system. Her large teak deck also was got a lot of TLC. For the ARC she received an asymmetrical spinnaker, a Parasailor, a twizzle rig, a drogue, a handheld water maker, a DuoGen, and secured drawers and cupboards.

Fenix II - Fenix II 21.10.2010 Start

The weather actually was kind to us and the morning showers cleared. The start was spectacular. I’ve never seen more than 200 boats lining up for a down wind start! We had a great start and heading South with 6.5kts. We even managed to have a celebration lunch fried chicken with fresh bread! Fenix II - Fenix 22.11 Visitors

22.11.2010      Visitors     ?26:10N15:46W?   I was coming off my watch around 1.00 am. Itwas a beautiful night. The full moon with a huge halo (Approx. 10 times thediameter of the moon itself.) appeared around 20.00. We were wondering if thisinfrequent phenomenon was a good or bad sign for our trip. We had light windaround 4-8kts and the asymmetrical spinnaker (AS) was filled propelling usforward with 6-7kts. My watch ended and as I was descending into the cabin whensuddenly Kynan called out. ?Liz, do you hear thiswhistling?? I listened and indeed there was a whistlingnoise, more like birds chattering than the authoritive call of a whistle. Theunidentified noise was sometimes louder, sometimes confused, sometimes veryweak. From time to time. read more...

Fenix II - Fenix 25.11 Fish

25.11.2010 Fish?394NM  20:59N 19:50W We are slowly settling into a routine on Fenix. The sharing of the watches, the cooking and cleaning duties are working well and everybody is in an agreeable mood. During the last two days we were sitting in a low wind area offering little pleasure of sailing. Most of the time we struggled to reach 4knts. Anyway I was in a bad mood as I managed to import some ?Spanish flue? from Las Palmas. To match our hapless situation, last night, in the middle of our dinner accompanied with some red wine, suddenly it became pitch dark. The moon, just like the wind, was slow on its feet and forgot to rise. A couple of stars made a pathetic effort to sparkle without any conviction. It felt like traveling in a pirate-ship under the cover of a. read more...

Fenix more fish 27.11

More Fishing    ~159nm  19:37N 21:58W            Another windless night.  Here I am sitting in the cockpit and contemplating the stories of seamen who got stuck in this region before. One story that comes to my mind is the trip of Magellan.  As we know, although Columbus set out to find a shorter route to the Spice Islands (roughly modern Indonesia) instead he bumped into America and this accidental discovery made him famous for ever.  Years passed by and the alternative route to the Spice Islands remained elusive.  But seamen, navigators, adventurers and fortune seekers remained mesmerized by the possibility of a fast route to bring spices, more valuable than gold, to Europe. . read more...
