Kinabalu - Log Day 01 - All Aboard (Including Our Friendly Minibus Drivers)
Sunday morning's events left us in turmoil. Colin was going home (for a rest) so Judy rushed up to the ARC Office around 10am and after a conversation with Adam Gosling and Nick from WCC (World Cruising Club), we made contact with Georg and Tara the minibus drivers to see if they wanted to join our crew! After "buy in" from our crew, Georg and Tara had one hour to get all of their gear, check out of their guest house, get onto our crew list and be on board. It was so exciting- bands playing up and down the pontoons, music and fan fare all around us as we made our way out of the marina towards the starting line. Can you imagine 239 participating yachts together with spectator boats and crowds of people on the shoreline? The starting line was drawn from the Naval.

Kinabalu - Log Day 03 - Enough Fish to Feed the Entire Fleet...
Some boats are reporting they've caught enough fish to feed the entire fleet. Our own fishing triumph came when Tara pulled in what could only be described as a miniature sardine, an exciting diversion from laundry washing! A little while later we didn't need our magnifying glass to see a large working ship, "Sandpiper," as it steamed by overtaking us on our starboard side, only a stone's throw away. Our imaginations ran wild as we envisaged diamond trafficking and various other illegal activities that could be taking place on board. As the sun began to set without a cloud in the sky, Judy excitedly prepared us for the "green flash", which ultimately only she saw of course! Blog by Tara and JudyPhoto by Taram_IMG_6896.

Kinabalu - Log Day 04 - Swimming with Sperm Whales
Well.....not exactly! As we make our way down to the Cape Verde islands we are looking out for turtles and dolphins, and even though this is a known "hot spot" for various whales we didn't think we'd actually see one... Yet suddenly around midday, on our starboard side there was a large spout of water. We continued our course which happened to be towards where we saw the spouting, and gradually an enourmous Sperm Whale made itself apparent right next to our cockpit. We were close enough to see its brownish grey, wrinkly skin, its "knuckles" down the end of its back towards its tail, and the droplets of water gracefully pouring off its tail as it lifted it out of the water. With one last breath of air raised its tail and disappeared without a splash into the deep blue.

Kinabalu - Log Day 05 - A Kinabalu Thanksgiving
It would have been fish tonight, and believe us Georg is trying, but we decided to go with a more traditional menu, including pan fried chicken breast with brandy cream sauce, accompanied by cranberry sauce (of course), as well as roast pumpkin and green beans, AND a special Kinabalu pumpkin crumble! Everything was absolutely delicious. Blog by Tara and JudyPhoto by Judym_IMG_2776.
