13 boats set off from Vanuatu, heading across the Coral Sea, on the final leg of their Pacific Ocean crossing. Their destination was Mackay on the north east coast of Queensland.Fatjax, a Shipman 63, was the first of the World ARC Rally fleet to arrive in Australia, sailing 1,104 nautical miles in just four days and 15 hours. Commenting on the passage, skipper and owner, Iain Kirkpatrick said, “The wind angle was perfect for the boat and just the right strength, so we flew along, averaging 10kts. The swell made it a bit uncomfortable at times, but in all, it was a really good passage, and an added bonus was having the light from the full moon.” Arriving a full day after Fatjax were Skyelark 2, Second Wind 2 (who had left from Fiji), Kaja and Asante.
