.....oh what a beautiful morning it was as we left
Horta in lovely sunshine and calm seas. We left at 7am with some assistance from
the crew of Low Profile, an ARC 2013 yacht, who are heading north in the next
few days back to sunny UK (?!).
Last night we said goodbye to Paul, Claire and
Sophie from Aditi, with whom we had exchanged e-mails on the trip to Horta,
though they left from St. Maarten and did not go via Bermuda. They are also
planning to head north and get back to the UK, but are in no real hurry to do so
at the moment. We wish both boats a good sail on a tricky passage at the best of
times.
After saying farewell we had a final drink in
Peter's Bar and then headed back to Andromeda for an early night not
withstanding the live music from outside Peter's Bar for a good part of the
evening!
Winds are light at the moment and the sea very
calm. We have seen no sign of whales, though a few dolphins have been spotted
some way off, several large flock's of Cory's Shearwaters, and there are lots
and lots of local fishermen out at present in the channel between Faial and
Pico. We have also seen quite a few jelly fish in these parts, including the
notorious Portuguese Man O' War - very dodgy and a wide berth was made of these
wee beasties. And last, but by no least, we have seen a Loggerhead Turtle, who
hatched in Florida and migrated to the Azores for a while, feeding on said jelly
fish and building strength, before heading back when a little older. The
one we saw was about 14 years old.
More in due couirse......
