The Saint Lucia Animal Protection Society (SLAPS)

The Saint Lucia Animal Protection Society (SLAPS) is an animal rescue charity based in Saint Lucia, the finish point of World Cruising Club’s largest rally, the ARC.

They have a simple mission: “To rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome as many precious lives as we can.”

In addition to the many rescues they undertake, one of their priority areas is to organise spaying and neutering of dogs and cats, whether it be stray animals or pets from a household with limited means.

Saint Lucia has a high number of strays and many of them face daily challenges of finding food and safe shelter. Overpopulation of animals causes fighting over limited food supplies, increased spread of diseases and greatly reduces the quality and length of animals’ lives. Some people allow their pets to reproduce, usually because they cannot afford the cost of spay/neuter surgery.  When homes cannot be found for the puppies and kittens, they are often dumped and left to die unless SLAPS are alerted.

Although there is some assistance on the island to spay/neuter animals, it is limited, so funding from World Cruising Club enables SLAPS to pay local vets to undertake surgery.
