The most popular sailing rallies
If you've sailed across the finish line of the ARC or taken part in one of the Caribbean's regattas, the likelihood is that you'll have had your photo taken by Tim Wright.
Tim is instantly recognisable as the intrepid photographer standing in a tiny rubber dinghy carrying a camera with a huge telephoto lens. From this precarious platform, Tim captures the power and beauty of yacht racing - you will see his photos in international yachting magazines and websites. Check out his website and shop at photoaction.com
Tim sailed his yacht, an 8.8m Elizabethan 29 called Andani, single-handed in the first ARC in 1986. Although Andani is small, he finished the rally from Las Palmas to Barbados (where the first rallies ended) in a very creditable 22 days and 14 hours at sea.
He describes himself in those days as a ‘young man, just going with the flow’, and fell into photography in 1992 when he was anchored in Bequia, when he decided to photograph boats in the Boxing Day round the island event. As his skills and reputation grew, he started covering Antigua Race Week and, since 2000, has been the finish line photographer for the ARC in Saint Lucia.
If you sail in the ARC, don't forget to wave to Tim as you cross the finish line. Day or night, he will be out to meet every boat - Tim doesn't get a lot of sleep!
ARC doesn't pay Tim; he is completely self-financing through the sale of photographs. You can buy a digital copy of your ARC memories from the Photoaction website photoaction.com year year-round, or from Tim's pop-up tent shop in Rodney Bay Marina during the ARC.
The photos on this page are a tiny snapshot of the 25 years of Tim Wright's ARC finish line photography.
